Katya Mandoki

Katya Mandoki is a Mexican philosopher, semiotician, and visual artist known as one of the pioneers of everyday aesthetics. Her work focuses on the role of sensibility, aesthetic communication, and cultural practices in everyday life, emphasizing the political and social dimensions of aesthetic experience. From a semiotic and evolutionary perspective, she developed the concept of “prosaics” to analyze aesthetic interactions within social institutions and identity formation.

She is the author of influential books such as Prosaica: introducción a la estética de lo cotidiano (1994), Everyday Aesthetics: Prosaics, Social Identities and the Play of Culture (2007), and The Indispensable Excess of the Aesthetic (2015). Her research combines philosophy, semiotics, communication studies, and cultural theory.

Founder and president of the Asociación Mexicana de Estudios en Estética (2007–2011), she has also served on the Executive Committee of the International Association for Aesthetics and on several international editorial boards. She taught and conducted research at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana from 1980 until retirement and currently lives in Jerusalem.
